Journalism can be a messy business. Whether it’s reporting on your own community, trying to get access to a difficult source, or covering traumatic stories, ethical questions will arise.Should I send my draft to a source? Is it OK to buy my source coffee? What do I do if a source asks me to unpublish a story they’re named in? Should I report on my boyfriend’s dad’s business? Is it acceptable to include a graphic photo in my story? The CAJ’s widely cited ethics guidelines are designed to help answer those questions and more. Join Pat Perkel and Terra Tailleur, two members of the CAJ Ethics Advisory Committee (EAC), to learn about these guidelines and the committee’s work. Learn how the CAJ’s ethics guidelines and the EAC’s discussion papers help journalists, newsrooms, their audiences, and the public understand what makes for good reporting - and prevent conflicts of interest, biases, and the human nature of reporting from damaging journalists’ accuracy.
